Po-Hi Symphony Orchestra Wins OSSAA Sweepstakes Award |
The Po-Hi Symphony Orchestra travelled to Edmond Santa Fe High School yesterday to compete in the OSSAA State Orchestra Contest. The group earned top marks with a rating of Superior in both Concert Performance and Sight-Reading. Combine this with the Superior Rating at State String Orchestra last November and the group has earned the OSSAA Sweepstakes Award for this year. This is the highest award OSSAA has to give to a musical organization.
This is the 6th year in a row the group has earned a Superior Rating in Concert Performance. The orchestra has a rich tradition here at Po-Hi. In the past 38 years, the orchestra has earned 33 superior ratings in Concert Performance, 31 Superior Ratings in Sight-Reading, and 24 Sweepstakes Awards.
One of the judges commented after the performance that this was most musical and heart-felt performance he had ever heard a high school orchestra do on one of the selections.

How Parents Can Help Their Middle or High School Child |
In middle and high school young people are developing emotionally, intellectually, and physically. Parents can help their children be successful students by encouraging them in the following ways:
- Create a quiet space for homework to be completed. A place free from disruption and fully stocked with supplies (pencils, pens, paper, stapler, tape, calculator, etc.) is ideal.
- Communicate with students about their homework, and what large projects and tests are upcoming.
- Keep a family routine concerning dinner, homework, and TV.
- Remember that intrinsic motivation leads to greater creativity. Allow students to try a variety of activities in order to find their true interests.
- Encourage students to keep trying when faced with a challenge. Remind students that parents and teachers are available to provide extra help.
- Encourage children to read if they want to improve their scores on standardized tests. The best way to improve reading comprehension and vocabulary is to read a lot.
- Help children set realistic goals and work toward them systematically. Also, no matter what the goal (making a sports team, improving academic grades, or learning a new skill) remind children that the journey is as important as attaining the goal.
- Allow adolescents some freedom yet, stay involved in their lives. We all learn through experience and sometimes failure is the best teacher.
- Praise adolescents for their contributions to family, school, and community. This conveys a belief in their accomplishments and helps to build a positive self-image.

Phonemaster attendance notifications are active. The message will say, " A student in your household was absent from one or more classes," since we have not yet found a way through the new PowerSchool program to identify the absentee in Phonemaster. If you have more than one student at Po-Hi, you will need to call the attendance office at 767-9523 or 767-9548 in order to clarify which one was absent.

Po-Hi For Credit Summer Program
Request Form
This summer, students will have an opportunity to take online semester courses. Taking a summer semester course will benefit students who need to free up time during the school year for athletics and additional electives or to recover a credit. Options this year include World History, Government, Physical Science, Earth Science, Chemistry, Health, Music Appreciation, Geography and Economics. Students will attend class once a week (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) and will take the majority of their course in an online, independent study format. It is important that students have access to internet outside of the school. Po-Hi teachers will meet with students as well as monitor progress with chat and e-mail communication. The session will run from June 7 to July 16 at Ponca City High School. The cost will be $150 per course. Payment will be due by June 7. Any course completed after the first day of school will result in an additional cost of $25 per month until the credit is recorded.
Students can sign up for summer school in the Counselors' Office. The enrollment deadline is May 14. Enrollment number must make for each class. Before school is out, teachers will contact enrolled students with course details. Questions should be directed to Bo Hannaford, Ponca City High School Principal at 767-9500.
